Following a minority Liberals victory in the September 2021 elections, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his new cabinet yesterday, introducing Sean Fraser as the country’s new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. This is the first time for Sean Fraser to be a part of the Cabinet and more importantly, being the Canadian immigration minister.
The Honourable Sean Fraser
Born to teacher parents, Sean Fraser grew up in Pictou County where he graduated high school. Fraser holds a law degree from Dalhousie University, a Master’s degree in Public International Law from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University.
Branded as a powerful speaker, Fraser has a knack for playing the guitar and bagpipes, and indulging sports such as basketball.
Before entering politics, Sean Fraser built a successful legal practice as a commercial litigator with one of Canada’s top-ranked law firms. He also studied international law under a Judge of the International Court of Justice and a Former Secretary-General of NATO as part of his Master’s Program in The Hague in the Netherlands. He also spent time working as a human rights lawyer for marginalized groups and individuals in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Minister Fraser served as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Central Nova after first being elected on October 19th, 2015.He was then re-elected in 2019 and now 2021. He represents the riding of “Central Nova” which covers a part of Halifax.
Fraser’s last role was as parliamentary secretary to the deputy prime minister and minister of finance and to the minister of middle class prosperity and associate minister of finance. He replaced Marco Mendicino, who has now become Canada’s public safety minister.
Shouldering Great Expectations
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Minister Fraser tweeted “I am humbled to have been appointed by PM @JustinTrudeau to serve as the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. Immigration will remain a key pillar of Canada’s recovery and I’m committed to ensuring that we continue to have the workers we need, where we need them.”
He further added, “We’ll also continue to keep our doors open to those fleeing persecution and conflict. I look forward to working with the hardworking public servants at IRCC towards these goals.”
This definitely throws light on his commitment to overcome challenges faced by the IRCC due to the pandemic, and brings hope towards economic recovery of Canada through overhauling of obsolete processes and supporting essential and progressive immigration pathways.
